Newly developed cement–ground granite scraps composite for solidification/stabilization of radioactive wastes: characterization and evaluation of the mechanical durability

Abstract The core objective of the present study is to develop an added value cement–granite composite (CGC) based on granite (G) scraps and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). were collected, washed, ground, sieved, finest powder was used as inorganic admixture for developing CGC. Plain water granite–cement thoroughly mixed. obtained pastes casted 28 days prior their physical, structural, thermal characterizations mechanical evaluation. Factors assumed, mostly, affect final properties CGC blocks, e.g. granite/cement water: cement ratios studied. reached monolith has many advantages, lower density, very low absorption percentage, acceptable compressive strength values significant radiation stability. Based experimental data it could be stated that: its economical where one basic components a waste. In addition traits developed composite, can candidate properly inert matrix some radioactive wastes containment, application in field including: construction sector (interior exterior household walls, floor tiles, etc.), others. environmental reward due management accumulated problematic solid is, certainly, gain.
